【Introduction】
The flora of Hong Kong is considered one of the most diverse in China, given its small area of just over 1000 km2. In addition, there are also a significant number of non-native plants in Hong Kong owing to its long history of human influence. These include the species purposely introduced for afforestation, landscaping, cultivation, etc., along with those exotic species being brought to the place unintentionally
The study of the flora of Hong Kong is one of the earliest in China, which began just before 1840s, with comparatively comprehensive records, in terms of both herbarium specimens and literature. Many species native to China were indeed first described from Hong Kong. Western botanists who first explored the flora of Hong Kong. Such early efforts of botanical studies were continued by the establishment of the Hong Kong Herbarium in 1878, which is the first public herbarium in China and is still in operation to serve the community.
