【Introduction】

   Compiled by the Commission of Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Veterinary Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China (2005)，abbreviated to Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia in this text, was brought into effect on July 1, 2006, which is the third edition of Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China.As the mandatory state official standard, Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia is the technical criterion for monitoring and supervising the quality of veterinary medicinal products, as well as the statutory requirements followed in the manufacture, management, examination and application of veterinary drugs. National Veterinary Product Inspection Agency investigates and inspects the availability of safe, effective, and good quality essential veterinary medicines according to the official standards enacted in Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia.The Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia 2005 was published in three volumes. Volumn Ⅰ covers monographs of chemical drugs, antibiotics, biochemical preparation, radiopharmaceuticals and excipients for pharmaceutical use; Volume Ⅱ deals with monographs of Chinese materia medica including prepared slices of Chinese crude drugs and traditional Chinese formulas; Volume Ⅲ consists of biological products, antibody products and diagnostical products. There are 446, 685 and 115 monographs involved in Volume Ⅰ, Volume Ⅱ and Volume Ⅲ, respectively. Each volume has its own General Notices, Appendices and Indexes.According to the suggestion of the Commission of Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia, the Ministry of Agriculture approved to publish the English version of Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia 2005. This is the first English version of Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China.The English version of Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia 2005 was published in one volume, which is divided into three parts covering chemical drugs, traditional Chinese medicines and biological products respectively. There are 650 kinds of monographs of drugs collected in this English version of Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia 2005, which are representatives of its Chinese edition. Each part consists of its own general notices, monographs and appendices. All items are compiled in an index so as to consult more conveniently.The publication of the English version of Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia 2005 not only provides opportunities for veterinary pharmaceutical scientists and technicians whose native language is English to read Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia and understand the national criteria for veterinary drugs, but also promotes the international exchanges of the experiences in the establishment of criteria for veterinary drugs. On the other hand, it is helpful for the import and export of veterinary drugs.The Commission of Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia invited a number of professors and experts in the veterinary pharmaceutical field to do translating works and assigned special persons for collation. Without their arduous but highly effective work, it would not be possible for the publication of the English version of Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia.
