FOREWORD
Work on this book was initiated in June 1990 under the auspices of Science and Technology Academy of Shanghai……
Shanghai covers 6340.5 square kilometers, an area much smaller than the neighboring provinces, and has no lofty mountains of dense forests……
The present book is divided into two volumes: Volume- 1 – flora, and volume 2 – the economic plants.
Volume 1, the flora, includes morphology, ecology, distributions of totally 1904 species and 392 infraspecific taxa of wild and cultivated plants of Shanghai, descriptions of 168 families and 981 genera, and keys to all taxa. Very rare plants which are cultivated for special experimental purposes are listed an appendix. For simplification and easy of use, families and genera descriptions have been simplified by avoiding repetitions. Morphological descriptions of species and infraspecific taxa, which was usually given in Chinese floras, manuals of icons, have been omitted. Morphological descriptions for certain species will be given in volume 2 Furthermore, Habit illustrations are provided only for new taxa, plants whose type specimens were collected in Shanghai, plants reported new for China, and plants not illustrated in any Chinese in Shanghai, plants reported new for China, and plants not illustrated in any Chinese flora. Besides, illustrated keys are provided for genera and more often for species that are difficult to identify.

In Volume 2, the economic plants of each part are classified into families as in volume, whereas the genera and species are arranged alphabetically. The volume includes species names, distributions, and production and uses of economic plants of Shanghai based on recent achievements in interrelated disciplines. The following are the major objectives of volume 2.
