種子形態的辨識，尤其是雜草種子，對雜草研究、鑑定、防治及植物檢疫具有重要的意義。本所持續於臺灣農田雜草之調查及鑑定之研究工作，同時執行防檢局『進口植物有害生物偵測鑑定』計畫，檢測鑑定自進口大宗穀物中夾帶之雜草種子，經過多年資料累積，將其種子、幼苗、植株及花的彩色照片，整理彙集出版。本書所收集69科534種植物，主要以本省農田雜草為主，可分為?雜草，?栽培植物，雜草包含本地農地水田、旱田雜草，自野外採集，外來雜草則是自進口穀物中偵測鑑定蒐集而來（加 ** 標示）；栽培植物指草花、蔬菜、草坪草種或香草植物等（加 * 標示）。
