In 1700’s century, the Swedish botanist Linnaeus published his Species Plantarum recording 5983 species known at that time, established a sex classification system, and proposed the East Asian and North American disjunction of plants. In 1800’ century, the Switzerland’s botanist de Candolle recorded 58975 plant species in his Prodromus (Prodromus systemati naturalis regni vegetabilis sive enumeratio contracta ordinum, generum specierumque plantarum huc usque cognitarum, juxta methodi naturalis normas digesta), arranged these species according to his newly established classification system, and proposed 20 basic distributional patterns of plant species in space. Since then, botanists around the world described new species in an increasing speed, more than one million names of plant species were described till today, but it was until 2010 that no book accommodating global plant species was published. The Global Plant Speciesrecorded 819 families 42186 genera (including 17394 accepted generic names) 1282280 specific names (including 283341-356015 species). In this book the ferns and fern allies were arranged according to RC Ching’s system, but seed plants were arranged according to new systems by the present author himself. The book also proposed a new coding system for plant species distribution based on floristic similarities among different geographic units (corresponding to continents).
The Plant Dictionary records 47122 names of plant families and genera based on a new revision of Global Plant Species, provides names of families and genera, their authorship, publication date, synonymic treatments, classification systems, distribution information in the world, and literature. This book contains 818 families, 46294 genera (including 19898 accepted generic names, and up to 14650 genera having distribution information), and 290713 accepted plant species.
