The International Symposium on Diversity and Taxonomy of Rhizolia (ISDTR) was held at the Huazhong Agricultural University Campus, Wuhan, Hubei, P. R. China, on October 3-8, 1994. Scientists from 10 nations attended the Symposium, 67 papers were presented orally and on poster. Opinions and information were exchanged between attendants. The papers presented at the Symposium were collected and published in this volume, which includes 25 papers presented by scientists of the host nation and 11 papers presented by foreign scientists.

The following main topics are involved:

1. Diversity of rhizobia and symbiotic systems;
2. Taxonomy of rhizobia and richness of rhizobia resources;
3. Molecular biology of nodulation;
4. Mechanism of competitive nodulation;
5. Genetic manipulation of rhizobia and construction of engineered
rhizobia.;
6. Methods in testing the fate of the introduced rhozobia, natural or
engineered, in soil and in nodule occupation
