If you have read any works on seeds of woody plants, you would probably regard this book, Seeds of Woody plants in China, as the most gigantic one you have seen. Except for the impressive size, you will be attracted by many illustrations, most of which are true-to-life drawings of the actual objects.
Of all the 492 pieces of articles, 435 are illustrated with two plates. Two of the articles are illustrated each by three plates, and 45 each by one.
Seeds of Woody Plants in China has been compiled under the auspices of the National Service Center for State-Owned Forest Farms and Woody Plant Seed and Seedling Affairs of the Forestry Administration.
76 scholars and specialists from forestry colleges and univrsities, forestry and botany research institutes and woody plant seed and seedling production and administrative departments all over the country participate in the preparation of the publication of the book.
In principle, the book was compiled with genus as the basic refit. Totally, 492 genera of woody plants,belonging respectively to 132 families, are treated of. With reference to tree species, 1222 species, 3 subspecies, 45 varieties, 4 forms and 2 cultivars have been dealt with, totaliug 1276 different species. And a small number of exotic tree species successfully introduced from abroad ale included.
In this book, gymnospermae have been arranged according to Cheng Wanchun' system (1978), while angiospermae to the revised J. Hutchinson' system (1959), though both have been slightly supplemented.
全书共收集了木本植物种子 492属1222种以及54个种以下分类等级，简要记述每种植物的生长习性、分布、用途和开花结实特点，着重描述果实的采收、种子调制、种子储藏、种子处理、发芽测定、播种等主要生产环节技术要点。
