There are 21 orders and 4327 species of mammals living in the world.
China has 14 orders and 533 species. This book introduces the mammals of China, it covers 14 orders, 51 families , 533 species and each species is given its name , feature, habit , breading, geographical distribution and protection grade, moreover, mainly describes 193 species of them which are large or middle-sized one and representative species, each with a color photograph and a distribution map.

outlet for human artistic expression．Today，mammals ale exploited for the same
pUl'pOses as in the past and will continue to be vitally important to man far into the future．In spite of their importance to marl’however’more and more mammalian
species in the world are in decline and／or in danger of extinction，often due to
man-made problems．In China as everywhere，habitat destruction caused by
human activity and population pressures，environmental pollution’pesticides’
climatic change，etc．have caused severe depletion in numbers of many species．
threatening the very survival of many of China’S indigenous mammals．In the
1980s，the dwindli mumbers of animals，especially among the medium—sized
and large-siZed mammals．set off an alarm in both the Chinese and international
scientific communities．In an effort to check the rapid decline in wildlife within
its borders’the Chinese Government enacted the WdldProtection Law of the
People’Rardazk of China on November 8.1988.In accordance with this
Wfldffe Protection Law，on December 1 0，1 988，theState Department issued a
Ksylist of Protected AnimaLsof all those wildlife species requiring governmental
protection。Both the Wildlife Protection Iaw and the key List of Protected Ani-
reals have served as linchpins of official Chinese pelicy on domestic wildlife COll．

The purpose of Mammalian of China is multifold．It first aims to supply the
general public with information presented in a colorful，entertaining and under-
standable way，while focusing on the ultimate goals of promoting public awareness!
