In 1984 a field-work team consisting of Huang Wanpo and Zheng Shaohua of IVPP,and Zhong Zhikai,Li Xuanmin and Yang Daihuan of the Chongqing Museum of Natural History investigated the Quaternary deposits along the Yangtze River from Chongqing to Wushan. In the course of the investigation, many fosil localities were discovered. Of these, the locality of Longgupo is most important. During the years 1985-1988, this locality was excavated intensively and the Wushan hominid specimen, Homo erectus wushanensis sub sp.nov.,stone artifacts and a great number of fossil mammals were found. This report is the preliminary result of that research.
