新疆维吾尔自治区北部准噶尔盆地和吐鲁番盆地一带中生代地层很发育，产脊椎动物化石，虽经多年地质调查，地层时代划分仍存在不少问题。中国科学院古脊椎动物与古人类研究所于1964-66年间组成了新疆古生物考察队，开展了野外考察工作实测了许多地层剖面，采集了大量的脊椎动物化石。经过室内研究总结，有关化石部分成果已编辑成“新疆古生物考察报告”三集分别发表在《中国科学院古脊椎动物与古人类研究所甲种专刊》第十、第十一和第十三号上。本书是该考察报告的最后一部分，内容系统论述了新疆北部中生代含脊椎动物化石地层问题，有典型地区地层实测剖面资料，并探讨了区域地层时代和分层的一些实际和理论问题。
