本书对黔西滇东晚二叠世含煤地层的划分对比以及生物群特征作了比较详细的讨论,并对一些生物门类的化石作了描述。汇入本书的门类有植物、孢粉、腹足类,其他一些门类有些已在古生物学报发表,或将另行陆续发表。
长兴阶下部Shevyrevites-Paratirolites菊石动物群的发现,使之可与伊朗西北部和苏联外高加索地区上二叠统的最高层对比,从而证实了长兴阶是二叠系的最高层位,可作为国际分阶的标准。
大羽羊齿Gigantopteris化石在整个上二叠统和三叠系最底部的发现以及二叠系顶部的煤层,证实了整个晚二叠世都是成煤期,从而打破了大羽时期的陈旧概念。
黔西、滇东地区海相和陆相的二叠、三叠系边疆剖面中混生生物群或过渡层的发现,对进一步研究和阐明古生代与中生代交界生物演替过程具有很大的科学价值
