In the "Proceedings of the Joint China-U. S. Phycology Symposium" are embodied most of the papers delivered at the meeting which took place at Qingdao (Tsingtao), People's Republic of China, 16-20 November, 1981. The meeting was attended by some of the well-known American and Chinese phycologists. The Symposium was jointly sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Academia Sinica) and the U. S. National Academy of Sciences and covered practically all the important phases of phycology. Published in this volume are 6 papers on systematics, structure, morphology and evolution, 3 on reproduction, life histories and genetics, 4 on ecology, interactions, community structure and diseases, 11 on physiology and biochemistry and 4 on cultivation and utilization, of the algae, altogether 28 papers.
This volume will be most helpful to phycologists who wish to have an overview of the phycological activities in the two countries involved, especially that of China which has a very short history of phycology and activities not widely known to the outside world.
