Hubei Province is located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River of China, north of the Dongting Lake, at 108°21′- 116°07′E. Long and 29°05′- 33°20′N. Lat., covering an area of 185, 000 k㎡. Mountains occur in the north, east and west parts of the province, forming a relief high in the west and low in the east, and plains are present in the south part.
The province extends across two geotectonic units – the Qingling fold system and the Yangtze paraplaform. Since the early Proterozoic, there have occurred well-developed strata, rich fossils, a large variety of sedimentary types, strong tectonism, frequent magmatism, a complete set of regional metamorphic types and favorable minerogenetic conditions.
