Henan is located in the lower and middle reaches of the Yellow River and throughout prehistory and history has served as the major center for Chinese civilization and political control. The province has been home to twenty different dynasties and their capitals, and thus has experienced a long and continuous history and culture. Excavated ceramics are numerous in number and rich in type, ranging from proto-porcelains of Shang and Zhou date to porcelains with various glaze colors of the Ming and Qing dynastic date.
