The lady beetles are familiar to people because of their beauty and economic and scientific importance. They have pleasing rounded forms and usually have the bright, contrasting red and black colors. Also, they are common in gardens, fields, forests, and even in and around dwellings in winter. Popular interest in lady beetles goes back to the Middle Ages. Certain species of lady beetles were dedicated to the Virgin Mary and were named Beetles of Our Lady.
Of the over 4,500 known species in the world, Taiwan has 196 species. However, some species on the list are till not well studied, especially small lady beetles such as those in Scymninae. In this book, we describe 67 species, the majority of them pretty and large.
