鲎是一种具有重要科学研究意义和经济价值的海洋动物，也是地球上动物界少数现存珍贵的“活化石”。我国是世界上少数拥有鲎资源的国家，世界上95％的中国鲎资源分布在我国，可以说，我国是中国鲎真正的故乡。我国的鲎研究一直得到国家有关部门的重视。
　　当今，由于经济迅速发展，海洋环境、沙滩受到污染，加上由于鲎的极大的经济价值，造成对鲎的乱捕滥杀，世界上鲎资源急剧衰竭，这已引起了世界各国政府的重视。我国鲎资源的衰竭更是触目惊心。在上世纪70—90年代，在我国广西北海海城，每年鲎的渔获量可达60×10（4）～70 x 10（4）对，到近年已减少至30×10（4）对。如果这样衰减的速度得不到遏制，再过数年，我国将成为无鲎的国家，中国鲎或许将只能是存在于教科书上的学名了。
　　本书作者自师从原厦门大学校长汪德耀教授从事鲎研究至今已逾30余载，深知鲎的重要性；感到有责任将多年来的研究工作总结整理成册，以为我国鲎研究人员提供一点借鉴，以便后来者进一步加深中国鲎的研究，使我国在世界鲎研究领域中占有举足轻重的一席之地。这是本书作者的初衷和愿望。
