秋海棠的屬名Begonia原是為了紀念法國植物學的推動研究者Michel Begon，用其姓締造而成，後來衍釋為 a color near coral pink，意為接近粉紅色珊瑚的顏色，指的是這屬植物的花大多為粉紅色。大部分的秋海棠在秋天盛花，與在春天開花的海棠是不同的植物。海棠是「薔薇科」的落葉喬木，和蘋果較相近，花朵艷麗，而「秋海棠」則是「秋海棠科」植物，以其粉嫩剔透及優雅的花姿，贏得秋天海棠的稱號。
全世界目前已知約1,600種的原生秋海棠，若加上人工培育的種類則超過10,000種。台灣原生的秋海棠目前已發表18種，其中14種為台灣特有種(含雜交種4種)，主要分布於中、低海拔較為陰涼濕潤的林下、林緣或岩壁上。部分種類廣泛分布，有些則僅見於某些特定地區，如九九峰秋海棠、台北秋海棠、坪林秋海棠…等。秋海棠的根、莖、葉、花及果實之形狀、顏色、質地、紋路……等千變萬化，令人嘆為觀止，深具綠美化價值。

This suprising diversith is enhanced by the fact thant 14 of Taiwan's species are endemic. Renowned for its variation and beatuty. Begonia is named after Michel Begon, the French naturalist who pioneered studies on plants, "Begonia" also refers to "a color near coral pink", refelecting that most species have pink blooms.
Begonia's native to Taiwan are elegant, refreshing, and diverse. There are tall varieties ae wellas short. Speices vary greatly in terms of the shape, color, character and appearance of stems, roots, leaves, flowers and fruit bodies. They provide endless pleasure in study and add significant value to landscaping disigns.
