Tian shan is one of the well-known mountain ranges in the world. A great number of its peaks, snowbound and sparkling bright, reach high into the clouds, while some pierce the blue, forming a grand spectacle in the firmament. They may be likened to mighty strongholds towering one after another along the northwestern borderline of China. The most outstanding of these is Mount Tuomuer, the top peak, which has been appropriately described as "the proud son of Tian Shan." The readers will find in this volume a collection of photographic reproductions exhibition the scientific findings obtained through the collective effort of the Chinese Mount Tuomuer Scientific Expedition. Many of the valuable illustrations included are mew evidences recorded by Chinese scientists, and are, therefore, revealed to the public for the first time. The Tian Shan region abounds in natural resources. Since time immemorial, various peoples have inhabited and worked in the north and south of Tian Shan which provide them with means of subsistence and foster their growth, but not much scientific data have been obtained from this region and still less do we know of its main peak, Mount Tuomuer. People adore Tian Shan, But in order to explore, preserve, and make good use of its resources, a wider and deeper knowledge should be acquired with regard to its features, its environmental factors, her function, her strength.
