This book is about the impact of the economic reforms on China's rural-urban relations and emergence of mega urban regions during the post-1978 period. The research focuses on the Shenyang-Dalian corridor in southern Liaoning province, Northeast China as just one of China's major urban concentrations. This corridor has been one of China's important industrial heartlands. It may be contrasted with China's other key economic regions by way of its traditionally city-based industrialization (based on its rich natural resource endowments )which came to be reflected in a dominance of heavy industrial sectors and high population concentrations in the large cities of the regions. The corridor's rich natural resource endowment, singular historical development, and recent administrative changes and transportation improvements have led to a clear spatial pattern which conforms with the EMR model-albeit with characteristics that clearly distinguish this region from from other mega-urban zones in China and elsewhere.
