Kaiping Diaolou come in many different forms and various styles. Functionally, they are classified into three main categories: dwelling towers which were of residential use; the mass assembly towers which were funded by members of the village; and night watchtowers which functioned as a patrol house. Considering the building materials, Kaiping Diaolou are comprised of stone towers, rammed earth towers, brick towers and steel-reinforced concrete towers. In terms of architectural forms, some of which possess the traditional Chinese-style gabled roof or overhanging roof, while other may come in various Western styles reflecting different historical eras, such as Greek style, gothic style, Islamic style, Baroque style, etc
