The compilation
of the 1990 edition Pharmacopoeia of The People's Republic of China (also
known as the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 1990) was organized in accordance with
the principles and requirements recom mended by the fifth pharmacopoeia
commission. It took more than three years to carry out the entire revision
process, starting with the planning of the revision work, the drafting
of monographs and the technical validation of testing procedures, until
finally the draft text was reviewed and adopted for publication by an
extended meeting held in December 1989 and attended by the chairman, vice-chairmen
of the pharmacopoeia commission and subcommittees. It is the fifth edition
of The People's Republic of China Pharmacopoeia since the founding of
new China.
The present edition of the pharmacopoeia is revised and published under
the leadership of the Ministry of Public Health with full support from
relevant authorities in this country. The work of revision was accomplished
through the collaborative efforts made by the departments of drug policy
and management, the drug handling and manufacuring enterprises, drug control,
education, research and clinical institutions.
This new edition of the pharmacopoeia is published in two volumes containing
1751 monographs of drug substances and articles. 784 monographs of crude
drugs, Chinese patent preparations and single ingredient preparations
are admitted to volume I; while 967 monographs of chemicals, antibiotics,
biochemicms, biological products, radio pharmaceuticals and formulated
preparations are admitted to volume General notice, appendix and index
have been incorporated respectively in volume I and [ to facilitate usage.
It is for the first time to add a History of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia
and a list of reference standards and chemical reference substances to
the pharmacopoeia. It is also for the first time to include monographs
of Chinese patent preparations which were kept confidential ever before
without details of the formulary and technical process. This is a new
step taken in an attempt to provide quality specifications
