Hubei province lies in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. It was
established as a province in 1664 in Qing Dynasty. Its location, which
is to the north of Dongting Lake, lent it the name Hubei (meaning north
of the Lake). Historically, the main body of its land was within the territory
of Jingzhou. From the Sui Dynasty (AD 581-618), part of the present Hubei
came under the jurisdiction of Ezhou, hence the name of the province is
often abbreviated to "E" During the Warring States Period (475-221
BC), it belonged to the "Chu" Kingdom, thus it has been habitually
called "Chu". Due to the above-mentioned historical changes,
Hubei is often referred to in general as " the Land of Jing and Chu"
Hubei province covers an area of 185900 square kilometers and has a population
of ver 59 million. Wulan city is its capital.
