The Pictorial Handbook of Chinese Birds is the first of its kind published in China. There are 1186 species of birds heretofore recorded from China, out of which we select 130 species, including endemic, endangered, and beneficial species as well as fair game. Each species is illustrated with at least a color photo or painting and is also appended with brief notes of description and a distributional map.
The Handbook may serve for use as reference by teachers and students in zoology, persons engaged in agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, foreign trade, arts and crafts as well as amateurs.

Comrade Liu Jingxian is mainly responsible for the color photos and paintings. In making Paintings, he endeavours to apply the technique of the Chinese classical paintings to scientific drawings, so as to render the paintings of birds more vivid and lively.
