China has a long history
of safflower cultivation, and is abundant in genetic resources. In addition,
great achievement in scientific research, processing and utilization has
been made. About 130 papers are compiled in the proceedings concerning
subjects of a wide range, such as cultivation, breeding, genetic resources,
growth and development and chemical composition analysis and utilization
of by-products are submitted. Majority of papers discussed are in
cultivation and breeding. It indicated that the scientists challenge themselves
to improve cultivation and obtain new varieties of safflower. We believe
that the proceedings will greatly promote the development of the scientific
research and production of safflower in the world.

It is not easy to subscribe to many journals for any a local research
/ experiment station. So to make it convenient to researchers, about 2500
abstracts have been collected and a literature database has been established
for consulting. We could collect abstracts of papers from journals till
July, 1992. Therefore, the safflower literature database does not include
all the thesis abstracts related to safflower. The abstracts compiled
in the collection are quoted from various journals of different styles,
in spite that I made great efforts to rearrange, some forms of them still
could not be stand.ardized. Furthermore, a considerable part of them are
quoted from CAB (Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau), the output abstracts
are all in capital letters, so, in the transitional process, some mistakes
in technical vocabularies are not easy to avoid. This compilation of abstracts
will be useful to many of the researchers of safflower.
Characerization
and Evaluation of
Safflower Germplasrr
In English 1993
By Li Dajue et al, 260 pages
Hardcover,
Price: US$45
The book has five chapters: In the first chapter, the
origin and distribution of safflower in the world as well as in China
are described. The second chapter presents the biological characteristics
of safflower on the basis of experiments in China and elsewhere, as found
in the related references. A chapter on collection and conservation of
safflower fives an idea of sampling strategy and current status of safflower
germplasm in China.
The fourth chapter describes agronomic characters, yield
components, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses and quality characters
of safflower, derived from the results of characterization and seed evaluation
experiments carried out in china. The last chapter presents the elite
germplasm of safflower and a catalogue of world safflower collection with
descriptors and descriptor states.
This book will server as a useful tool for the better understanding and
effective conservation and use of safflower genetic resources.
