The International Conference Hydropower '98 HP'98) was held in Beijing, China, October 20-24, 1998. The aim of the Conference is to provide an opportunity for the scientists and engineers working in different fields of medium sized hydropower stations to make contact and to exchange information, ideas and experiences in planning, designing, construction, operation and research of hydropower.

This International Conference is jointly sponsored by Chinese Society for Hydro-Electric Engineering (CSHEE) and State Power Corporation of China (SP). On behalf of the academic and organizing committees, I would like to express my sincere welcome and to thanks to the all participants from various countries and regions of the world. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to the cosponsored units, International Committee on Large Dams (ICOLD), International Association for Hydraulic Research (IAHR), Chinese Hydraulic engineering Society (CHES) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China for their support and cooperation as well as HRW-Hydro Magazine, which assure the success of this Conference.
