Water,
the source of all lives, covering an area of 70 per cent of our earth,
is tightly bound to the development of human being. However, as everything
has its side effects, water brings happiness as well as disasters to people.
Therefore, how to exploit water resources has become a serious problem
to everyone of us.
China, as the third largest country, is rich in rivers and lakes. The
theoretical waterpower resources get to 680 million kw with an annual
generating capacity of 5900 billion kwh, both of which are listed first
in the world. As an agricultural country, rich power resources are stored
in thousands of medium and small rivers, alpine lakes, dissolution caverns,
and subterranean rivers, in the vast rural areas, besides the famous three
Gorges on the Changjiang River and Yarong Zangbo River. It is estimated
that the exploitable medium and small hydropower resources are over 139
million kw, with an annual generating capacity of 695 billion kwh, among
the 2300 counties, 1104 have exploitable waterpower resources of over
10000 kw.
