The Volume 1 selects the fishes from Changjiang river
. 169 species belonging to 28 families are compiled in this volume, representing
all species of economic importance in the drainage basin, species of common
occurrence, and the representative species from the different types of
physical environments in the upper, middle and lower reaches of Changjiang
river. The book reflects the general features of fishes in the drainage
basin of the Changjiang river and provides some scientific information
for exploring and utilizing the fish resources
(28 families): Acipenseridae, Clupeidae, Engraulidae, Salangidae, Anguillidae,
Catostomidae, Cobitidae, Cyprinidae, Homalopteridae, Bagridae, Siluridae,

The main contents of the second volumes are the
fishes from the Zhujiang river (pearl river) system, including some endemic
species from Fujian province,Yuannan province and Hainan Island. Them
mirror the features of the fresh water fish-fauna of the South China subregion
on the whole. This region is situated in the tropical-subtropical region
and the Tropic of Cancer runs across its central section. The weather
is warm and humid, and in most part of this area is no frost throughout
the year. There is a scarcity of natural lakes in this region except the
Yunnan Plateau. Most rivers run through hilly land and take meandering
course, with limpid and rapid current. Therefore, the proportion of the
warm-water fishes adapted to rapid stream such as Barbinae, Labioninae
of Cyprinidae, Homalopteridae, and Sisoridae is Quite large in the composition
of the fish-fauna. Moreover, the river system is distributed over tropical
Karst region, where numerous ridges, peaks, caverns and subterranean streams
are developed. Its complex environment resulted in the rise of many endemic
species. Consequently the fish-fauna is more diverse and plentiful in
this region. In addition, we also select some endemic fishes from the
Hengduan Mountain Range in Northwest of Yunnan and west Shchuan. This
mountain range is the eastern border of the Qinghai-Xizang(Chinghai-Tibetan)
plateau and its environmental condition are rigorous, with harsh climate.
Schizothothoracine and neomachiline fishes constitute the main component
of the fish-fauna in this region. These species are included in this volume
as an epitome of fish-fauna of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. 179 species
belonging to 28 families are compiled in this volume. A brief introduction
and location of photo taken are given for each species both in Chinese
and in English.
(28 families): Dasyatidae, Clupeidae, Engraulidae, Plecoglossidae, Salangidae,
Anguillidae,Cobitidae, Cyprinidae, Homalopteridae, Siluridae, Clariidae,
Schibeidae, Cranoglanididae, Bagridae, Amblycipitidae, Sisoridae, Poeciliidae,

The content of the third volume describes fishes mainly from the northern
part of China. It reflects the status quo of the freshwater fish-fauna
and the fih resources in the northeast and the northwest China. Being
located in the high latitude and the frigid zone, the northeast of China
belongs to the frigid-temperate and temperate region. A great number of
cold water fishes distribute in the region, such as the families of petromyzonidae,
Acipenseridae, Salmonidae, hymallidae, Osmeridae, Esocidae, Gasterosteidae,
Cottidae and the genus Phoxinus, Leuciscus of Cyprinidae. Among them some
are anadromous fishes. However , Leuciscus brandti and L.hakonensis are
the only anadromous fishes in Cyprinidae, which are very rare in the world.
In the Tumen Tiver, Acipenser medirostris which is endemic. Sachalin is
the first record in China. The northwest China is located in the inland
of Asia. It has a typical contental climate with arid weather, sufficient
sunshine and great change of temperature between day and night. Within
its boundary, there are high mountains, meadows, deserts and Gobis. Besides
the Huanghe River and the E-erqisi river, there are some other rivers
and many mineralized lakes such as the Talimu River, Yili river, Qinghaihu
Lake, Bositenghu Lake and Wulungu Lake. In the region neighbouring with
northern border of Qinghai-Xizang(Chinghai-Tibetan) Plateau, the fish-fauna
mainly consists of Schizothoracinae and Triplophysa of Cobitidae. But
in the Gansu Corridor and its western area, the fish-fauna is relatively
poor, a few saline-alkali-resistant and cold-resistant fishes of Cobitidae
and Cyprinidae distribute in this region. The E-erqisi River, located
in the northern Xinjiang, is the only drainage in China which empties
itself into the Arctic Ocean. Its fish-fauna is characterized by possessing
Thymallus arcticus arcticus, Esox lucius, Tinca tinca, Rutilus rutilus
lacustris, Leuciscus idus, L.leuciscus baicalensis, Aspius aspius, Perca
fluviatilis, Acerina cernua and Cottus sibiricus altaicus. In addition,
fish-fauna is very abundant in Yunnan Province which is located in the
southwest of China and, some species were described in the second volume.
Here we add the others in this volume. 142 species belonging to 17 families
are compiled in this volume. A brief introduction and location of photo
taken are given for each species both in Chinese and in English.
(17 families): Petromyzonidae, Acipenseridae, Salmonidae, Thymallidae,
Esocidae, Cyprinidae, Cobitidae, Homalopteridae, Sileridae, Bagridae,
Sisoridae, Gadidae, Gasterosteidae, Percidae, Eleotridae, Gobiidae, Cottidae.
