The 5th workshop of Ecology of Subalpine Zones of IUFRO (International
Union of Forestry Research Organizations ) was held from the 5th to 14th
of September, 1990, in Chengdu, China. From the 5th to 7th of September,
three days of academic exchanges were conducted in Sichuan Research Institute
of Forestry. Centering on the subject of this workshop rotection and management
of mountain forests? experts and scholars form various countries and regions
expressed their opinions and carried on an animated discussion. 118 treatises
or reports were, in all, submitted to the workshop, dealing with various
aspects of management of mountain forests. From the 8th to 14th of September,
the experts and scholars went to subalpine forest areas in West Sichuan
to make a field investigation. The workshop lasted ten days altogether.
In line with the usual practice of the past four workshops and the requirements
of participants in this workshop, a part of the submitted treatises and
reports have been chosen as the proceedings for publication after discussion
by the academic committee of this workshop.
