This book presents the methodological approaches, collected
field data, research findings, and policy recommendations of nine analytical
studies that were commissioned by the Task Force in its first phase from
2000to 20001. These case studies were designed to cover issues as the
conversion of upland agriculture, natural forest management and protection(including
the logging ban), reforestation and ecological forest rehabilitation,
and grasslands management. The case studies also included research on
the socio-economic implications of the Central Government's natural resource
policies on how develop alternative livelihoods for the rural population
and enhance the welfare of those dependent on forests, steep farmlands,
and grasslands, while also meeting the needs of downstream communities.
