China is rich for tree species resources, possessing over 8000 Species of woody plants of which there are over 2000 arbor species and over 6000 shrub species. Among those arbor species, there are over 1000 commercial and special-use economic tree species. These tree species resources provide the socialism economy-construction of Chins with enormous quantity of wood for building materials, ship-making, furniture, coal-mine pole, sleeper, pole, paper-makingand other uses. This book includes the Chinese domestic and exotic tree species belonging to 179 families, totaling over 6 million words covered in 4 separate volumes. The tree species in this book are described in 4 respects: 

1. Correctly distinguish various tree species and make use of their characteristics to provide the forestry production departments with scientific and theoretical basis for cultivation and forest regeneration. 

2. According to the growth characters and their requirement of various tree species to their geographical distribution and ecological environment, the afforestation planning can be worked out to attain the goal of matching tree species with the site. 

3. Provide forestry technology for important tree species. 

4. Describing the economic value and their protective effects of the forest formed by the important tree species provide scientific basis for the rational use of tree species resources. The first, second and third volume of Sylva Sinica have already been published, including 121 families, 670 genera, totalling over 5 million words. The fourth volume has been under compiling. Sylva Sinica is a monumental work in the field of Chinese forestry fundamental theoretical subject, which will play an important role in forestry research, forestry education and the modernization of forestry production.
