If it is true that the form of tombs and burial objects
reflect a society, China's imperial tombs and mausoleums can be regarded
as inverse images of its ancient society. This book contains a large amount
of historical material describing the development, types and dynastic
variations of the country's imperial tombs and mausoleums through its
history. Representative tombs and mausoleums are selected and chronologically
arranged to present and explain in detail the construction of underground
palaces and the characteristics and artistic styles of their surface structures.
Also given special note are the tombs of Confucius and Guan Yu : Though
not of aristocratic origin they hold specific social positions in China's
history. Along with a comprehensive listing of more than four hundred
imperial tombs and mausoleums, there are over one hundred rare photographs
selected to reflect the ageless development and dramatic nature of China's
imperial tombs and mausoleums.
