Science and technology indicators are a means of describing, analyzing and evaluating S&T activities. The 1996 edition of the book takes primarily the S&T statistical data as well as the relevant socio-econoic ones (temporarily excluding those for the regions of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) for 1994-1995 and the Eighth Five-Yea Plan period as the basis to do overall and systematic description and analysis of the activities, development, role and impact of China's science and technology via abiding by guiding ideology that rely on S&T, and that S &T work must be oriented to economic construction while striving hard to climb the peaks of science and technology
