UNAFEI has a long history of research into the study of criminal justice
issues in the Asia-Pacific region. This research has been conducted in
compliment to the international training activities of our Institute,
and has focused on the comparative study of criminal justice systems and
the collection of primary materials. As a part of these activities, UNAFEI
has published several books relating to criminal justice administration
in the Asia-Pacific. Amongst these have been: " Adult Probation Profile
of Asia" , "Prosecution Systems of Some Asian Countries (Japanese
version)" and "Criminal Justice Profiles of Asia."
Howeer concern has been raised, particularly by UNAFEI alumni, regarding
th eabsence of imformation in the international arena on corrections in
the Asia-Pacific region. In response to this need, and with the assistance
of seven corrections professionals, UNAFEI has published this work, "Institutional
Treatment Profiles of Asia" Taking this opportunity, I would like
to express my deepest gratitude to each of the authors who willingly participated
in this project, and provided their work for this text.
" Institutional Treatment Profiles of Asia" outlines th ecorrectional
systems of seven countries within the Asia-Pacific region. We invite readers
to comparatively study the systems presented in this book with that of
their own countries, considering methods to inprove or promote their respective
national correctional administrations. It is my hope that " Institutional
Treatment Profiles of Asia" wil serve as a foundation from which
further develop criminal justice administration for the benefit of their
own society and that of th einternational community
