Nansha Islands, China's only sea region close to the equator, is abundant in Indo-Malay tropical fauna with high biodiversity. Fishes living in the vast sea regions from Nansha Islands northward to Xisha Islands, Zhongsha Islands, Dongsha Islands, waters off Hainan Island, Beibu Gulf and South China coastal waters, are complex in species biodiversity and variable greatly in ecological characteristics, i.e., there are pelagic species, species of coastal zone in continental shelf, species of coral reef and species from deep sea basin several thousand meters in depth. Today , how to utilize the fishery resources of South China Sea more efficiently and continually has become an important subject for study in consideration of developing while strengthening protection on these resources. This collection of fishes in Nansha Islands and South China coastal waters is compiled and edited by scientific personnel who carried out the very in-situ investigation and classification in recent years. The authors contribute the book to and believe that the book to and believe that the book, 564 species, 301genus, 139 families described, will be of reference value to persons who engage in fishery production and management in Nansha Islands and other waters of South China Sea from enterprises and Institutions, and to related leaders from higher authorities.
