As a result of the eastward invasion of Tethys Sea owing to th sea floor
spreading in the Early Cenomanian, a shallow gulf was formed in the western
Tarim Basin. Since then, the gulf had undergone a development history
alternatively occurring of a normal neritic environment with a littoral
lagoon. At the end of Eocene the Indo-Pakistan Plate drifted northward
so as to make the sea water retread completely from this area.
The marine Stata of the Late Cretaceous and the Early Tertiary, however,
in which bearing very abundant many sorts of marine fossils, are widely
distributed along the foot of Mt. Southern Tianshan, Mt. Kunlun, and Mazartag
in the central Tarim basin. |
