The western Tarim Basin in S.Xinjiang, a part of the Tethys during Late
Cretaceous-Early Tertiary includes three main depressions: the Kuqa, the
Kashi and the Xinan depressions. In these depressions, the marine Upper
Cretaceous and Lower Tertiary are widespread and developed.
The Upper Cretaceous and Lower Tertiary along the foot of Mt. Southern
Tianshan consist ascendingly of such formations as the Kukebai, Dongba,
Artashi, Qimugen, Kalatar, Wulagen and Bashibulake; while the upper Cretaceous
along the foot of Mt. Western Kunlun are the formations of Kukebai, Wuyitake,
Yigeziya and Tuyilouke. In the Kuqa depression, the Upper Cretaceous is
red terrestrial deposit called bashijiqike group, where the lower Tetiary
formations of Talake, Siaokuzbay and Awate are is a young order
