雪豹是地球上非常重要的食肉动物和高山旗舰物种，被誉为"雪山之王"。它主要分布在中亚山地，围绕新疆和西藏的这几个国家。新疆又是我国面积最大的省区，占去国土面积六分之一，群山环绕，雪豹数量和分布面积居全国或全世界之先列。然而，如今雪豹已不再生活在人类足迹难以涉及的荒野中了，人类正在逐步侵入它的生活空间。雪豹的栖息地逐渐退化，它正濒临灭绝，前景不容乐观。经过作者本人近10年的野外痕迹调查，红外线自动照相机拍摄，积累和记录了丰富的资料，考察足迹遍布新疆的阿尔金山、昆仑山、喀喇昆仑山、帕米尔高原、天山、北塔山、阿尔泰山、塔尔巴哈台山等。积累了大量新疆雪豹分布资料，是目前濒危物种保护、西部大开发、科研、教学、观光旅游、博物学、户外运动、动物园及养殖业、文化艺术表达、国际合作交流的专业书。
