Amphibians of China is an academic monograph based on decades of fieldwork research, laboratory research,and references to a large amount of literature. The whole book, in three volumes, is divided into two parts.The first part is an introduction section, including the history of Chinese amphibian studies,an overviewof China's nature, the biodiversity and geographical distribution of amphibians in China, the ecological typesof amphibians in China,and the taxonomic terms and measurement methods of amphibians. The second part,the taxonomic section, includes detailed descriptions of China's known 14 families, 96 genera,and more than600 species and subspecies with the Latin names,Enlish names, synonyms, morphological characteristics,biological data, population status, threatened category, geographical distribution, and taxonomic discussion.There are about 10,000 copies of various pictures,including some skeletal pictures that are presented for the firsttime.The whole book provides a comparison of the completely ossified characteristics of each genus or group ofspecies,providing a broad basis for the study on structure and function of frog body.
Volume I contains Gymnophiona,Urodela, and Anura (including Bombinatoridae, Megophryidae,Bufonidae,and Hylidae), with a total of 200 species and subspecis. Volume II includes Ranidae and Dicroglossidae, with a total of 187 species and subspecies. Volume III covers Occidozygidae, Ceratobatrachidae,Rhacophoridae,Microhylidae, and four introduced species for a total of 217 species.
Amphibians of China Volume II is divided into two parts. The first part consists of 2 families, 5 subfamilies,34 genera, 187 species and subspecies, and is accompanied by around 3200 various pictures. The second partis appendix, including keys of tadpoles and eggs, measurement data for adults, tadpoles, and eggs, skeletalterminology for adults, and karyotypes I and karyotypes II of Ranidae and Dicroglossidae. The second part alsoincludes geographic distribution of species, indexes of Latin names and English names, and images of Chinese type specimens from museum and other institutions.
The whole book is useful for researchers in scientific research institutions, university and college students, agricultural, forestry,and animal husbandry technicians, and for the staff of rare and endangered animal protection and management departments. In addition, this book can be used as a reference for customs, commodity inspection, and other departments.
