Based on detailed research on the male stridulatory area and the male genitalia, we recorded 6 tribes, 47 genera and 242 species of the subfamily Phaneropterinae, among which two genera and nine species are new to science. Phylogenetic positions, morphology, biology, distribution patterns, economic significance and collecting methods on Phaneropterinae are given in detail. Keys to Orthoptera subfamilies, Tettigonidae families, and Phaneropterinae genera and species of China are provided. Diagnostic characters, description, distribution of every tribe, genus and speices of Phaneropterinae with important illustrations are presented. The fauna described not only enriches our knowledge about katydid biodiversity, but is also very significant for further research on biogeography and behavior of Orthoptera.
