This is the first, in China or abroad ,large-scale, multifunctional reference book having standardized scientific names of plants. Its first publication comprises five volumes:Vol.1 In Latin ,Chinese and English(A-D),Vol.2 In Latin, Chinese and English(E-O),Vol.3 In Latin,Chinese and English(P-Z),Vol.4 Chinese Index and Vol.5 English , Japanese and Russian Indices .This book contains a total of 418,831 Latin entries, including all the names of families and genera. The scientific names, including the author names. are standardized according to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. The plant names in 5 languages compiled in this book amount to a total of 967,723 and they can be cross referenced ,making it equivalent to 20 bilingual dictionaries. Also ,symbols are used to indicate those non-native to China, woody or herbaceous, seed plant genera unique to China and the plants listed as”endangered” by relevant government bodies. This dictionary serves as a highly valuable source of reference not only for scientists, students and workers in plant sciences and related fields, but also for teachers ,students and workers in the areas of agriculture, forestry ,medicine ,environmental protection and conservation ,biotechnology, plant quarantine ,horticulture ,press and publication ,foreign trade and tourism industries!

Standardization of Scientific Names

Latin names of plants are referred as scientific names. On the other hand, names in all other languages are referred as commom names or vernacular names. In reality , there are many problems with either the scientific names or the common names.
Writing this dictionary, I standardized scientific names in the following six cases:1abbreviation of author names are not standardized;2termination of the name does not match with Latin grammar;3there is a hyphen"-"in added words;4author names are missing or misused;5 names do not follow the rules of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature or the International Code of the Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants.6 there is an author name(s) in an autonym.

Generic names

Of the seven major taxonomic ranks in classification of living organisms, the"genus" rank is the most important. This is because the first world of the names of a species is generic name and family names and the majority of the names of the rank "order" stem from genetic names. Also, generic names cannot be changed unless sanctioned by the Codes.
There are 13000-17000 general of seed plants worldwide.A total of 58,746 generic names are included in this book and, of these,16,436 are regards as "good" genera and 42,310 as synonyms. In this book ,all generic names have standardized author names. Also,"narrow sense" generic names are adopted(although I do not necessarily agree with such treatments) and ,for the convenience of cross-reference,"broad sense" generic names are given to the "narrow sense" generic names. All the "good" genera are given Chinese names. For plants non-native to China, some generic names are adopted from the literature. For plants non-native to China, some generic names are adopted from the literature, of which approximately 2,000 were proposed by Bing Liu and Su Liu.For non-native genera, inappropriate Chinese translations are treated s synonyms. In this dictionary, nearly 10,000 Chinese names are newly given by the author mainly according to the meaning of the Latin name.morphological characteristics and distribution.

Family names

Family names stems from the name of the type genus. However, the Code allows that nine families to have alternative names and none of the names in each pair originated from the type genus. Therefore ,readers can simply refer to the type genus for interpretation of the family name.
Of a total of 4,124 family names included in this book ,1061 were treated as "good" families and other 3,063 as synonyms.Chinese names are given to all the "good" families and the author names are standardized.
Descriptions under family names also include Chinese names and the names in other languages .Family names conserved according to the Vienna Code are indicated in the book. All the newly-proposed Chinese names for the families are based on the names of type genera according to the rules of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.
According to the Code , author names in brackets are not permitted in the names of the ranks above the genus and , therefore ,such common errors are corrected by the author.
Further descriptions of families and genera will be published in another volume in the future.

Compilation of the dictionary

Seaching through a vast amount of dictionaries and reference books year in and year out ,I deeply felt the importance of how reference books similar to this are structured. It took me some time to decide the structure of the dictionary in order to make it easy to use ,to save reader's time and to lower the printing costs. In the end ,the dictionary is indexed in two ways; the entries in the text are arranged in an alphabetical order of Latin while each entry is given a number.
In this dictionary ,plant names can be cross-referenced in five different languages .Thus, the dictionary has 20language-converting functions;in another word, it can be used as 20 individual bingual dictionaries.
The content of this book covers the great majority of commonly used names of families , genera ,species ,subspecies ,varieties, subvarieties, forms ,subforms ,hybrids and cultivars.
In this dictionary , symbols are used to provide information on plants unique to China, woody or herbaceous and endangered plants etc. Such arrangement substantially saves space and , at the same time ,instantly provides readers relevant information.
