This new publication, A Synopsis of the Avifauna of China, is substantially a revisea and enlarged edition of the Distributional List of Chinese Birds. It includes all the birds hitherto recorded from China, compring 1,186(3?) species with 953(12?) subspecies in addition, totaling 2,139(15?) forms, which are classified under 81 families and 21 orders.
Under each species included in this monograph, the following items are listed: (1) Nomenclature; including scientific names with synonyms whenever necessary, Chinese names, and English names, (2) Breeding habitat, (3) Range of distribution, and (4) Status.
The monograph also contains all the new subspecies discovered by Chinese ornithologists since the founding of New China:
