China is vast in territory, rich in fish resources and has a variety of fish species. The Synopsis of Freshwater Fishes of China, but no other existing book, contains such large amount of information about the characteristics and distributions of all freshwater fishes of China and keys to orders, families, genera and species. It covers 1010 freshwater fish species in 268 genera, 52 families and 19 orders (except 2 genera and 13 species in addendum), including 156 new species, 9 new genera, 56 new speciefic records and 14 new generic records discovered during the period of 1982 to 1992. It also presents line drawings of cach species (except 10 species) for identification. Especially five appendixes offer users a great convenience: 1, general standards and formulas for the fish biological researches; 2. aquatic wild animals under state's specieal protection in China; 3. collection, manufacture and preservation of the fish specimens; 4. a list of interoduction of freshwater fishes for aquiculture from abroad ; 5. number of living fishes of the world. This Synopsis is highly detailed reference work designed to serve as a valuable guide for ichthyologists, aquarists, and fish hobbyists.
