This volume of Fauna Sinica deals with a Class Ophiuroidea of the Phylum Echinodermata, occurring in Chinese waters. The more important work dealing with the Ophiuroids of China was done by Liao et Clark in their book, The Echinoderms of Southern China, in which 131 ophiuroids were recorded. The number of species included herein is 221, belonging to 89 genera in 15 families of 2 orders. Of these 12 species are new to science and 61 species are recorded from China for the first time.
The text contains two parts: a comprehensive survey and a systematic descriptions. The former part provides the historical review, morphology, system of classification, and ecology, including habits and behavior, geographic distribution, as well as biological relations. The latter part covers the systematic account for Ophiuroidea of China, diagnoses are given the higher taxa above species, keys to aid identification and details of characters of species, among other observations.
