The Kunlun Mt.Earthquake(Ms=8.1), occurred in Nov.14,2001, is the earthquake of the greatest magnitude, occurred in the Continent, Chian, after the Dangxiong Earthquake, Tibet(Ms=8.0)of Nov.18,1951. This earthquake occurred in the East Kunlun Fault, extending in EW direction approximately, located on the Kekexili depopulated area, north of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Huge energy released by the earthquake made the magnificent Kunlun Mt.slipping and cracking, leaving a surface rupture in the south slope of Kunlun Mt. The seismic surface rupture zone was 426km in total, several hundred meters in width. The serious surface deformation zone was several decade meters to several thousand meters in width, with a max. left-lateral displacement of 6~7m. In the vicinity of the mile-stone with a mark of 2894 in the Qinghai-Tibet Railway under construction was also destroyed seriously. The destruction was great in scale, thus it was also seldom found in the world.
After the occurrence of the Kunlun Mt.Earthquake(Ms=8.1)of Nov.14,2001, scientists were organized by the China Seismological Burean for investigation of the earthquake area, recording immediately the first-hand data of surface rupture and engineering damage in the Earthquake actually and truly. The photos of this album show objectively the surface rupture zone and the full view of earthquake damage in the earthquake, compensating the loss of kinetic parameters of the seismic surface rupture in the north of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and providing the necessary research basic data of the present crust movement in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its adjacent area.
