【Introduction】

Qiangtang basin, about 18×104 km2, is the biggest Mesozoic remnant marine sedimentary basin in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, between lazhulung-Jinsha Jiang suture belt and Banggong Co-Nu Jiang suture belt. The pre-Devonian to Quaternary strata are outcropped in the basin. Especially, Triassic to Jurassic marine deposits are developed widely, with the total thickness of more than 10000m, main hydrocarbon source, reservoir and cap rocks in the basin.
The basic framework of the basin, “one uplift between two depression”, can be subdivided into 12 structural units. In the western North Qiangtang depression and the eastern South Qiangtang depression the deposits are well preserved, with deeply buried basement and well-developed anticlines, so they are the relatively favorable regions for petroleum exploration in the basin. Comprehensive evaluation, results indicate that Qiangtang basin has basic conditions to form oil and gas pools.
