1. Information about 370 herbaria in China has been received, but only 318 of them are qualified for inclusion in this book. The herbaria re arrabged in the alphabetical order of their abbreviations. Of the cities and ultimately of the provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions where they are located.
2. The herbarium abbreviations follow those adopted in Index Herbariorum (8th ed.), or those which have long been in use in Chinese literature, while new ones are formed according to conventional rules.
3. Works of joint authors are listed only under the chief-editors institutions
4. Chinese personal names which had appeared in publications in the Wade-Giles or other old systems are adopted in the English text of this book, modern Pin-Yin spellings of those names are provided for cross-reference in the appendices. All the names are arranged alphabetically in the appendices.
5. In Appendix IV. 345 herbarium abbreviations are listed, of which 10 followed by one asterisk are not listed in the main text for lack of original data, and 18 followed by two asterisks had already been merged into other herbaria
