【Introduction】

The Panzhihua-Xichang or Panxi Rift in the southwestern part of Sichuan Province, China, is located immediately to the east Himalayan suture zone and at the southern margin of the Yangtze plate. This monograph describes both the surface and the deep geological processes occurring relative to the domain of this area mainly after Sinian and prior to the Indosinian orogeny. Emphasis is put on tectonic settings, magmatism, rift sedimentation and mineral resources related to the crustal extension and evolution of the lithosphere, on the basis of geological, geochemical and geophysical field investigations. Magmatism of this area is discussed in more detail in connection with petro-and geochemistry and its evolution.
