The Grand Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, the earliest man-made river and the longest on Earth, is as famous as the Great Wall. It is regarded as one of Chinese everlasting architectural masterpieces, and one of the two man-made wonders of human civilized history. Form the dual perspectives of time and space, the canal is a marvel to people both at hone and abroad. Running north and south, it connects many river systems such as the Hai, the Yellow, the Huai, the Yangtze and the Qiantang Rivers ,and looks like half of the Chinese character “丰”. Like thread through beads, the canal links Chinese richest and most beautiful cities: Beijing, Tianjin, Jining,Yangzhou,Zhenjinang,Wuxi,Suzhou and Hangzhou.

But as the years go by, the banks of the cancel began to collapse and the river became more narrow, their water levels declined and its quality deteriorated .The once proud canal`s reputation was sullied.

After five years of assiduous work, the first phase of the project (the section that runs across the downtown area of Hangzhou)has been completed: the Canal Museum, the green belts on either band, two squares, three parks ,six docks and fifteen bridges have all opened to the public. Scenic roads have taken shape and the green belts along the canal have been joined together. Many spots rich in canal culture are linked together shining brightly day and night.
