During Xia and Shang dynastic eras, the Chinese peoples created proto-porcelain wares on their experience in producing white pottery wares and impressed pottery wares. The earliest examples of proto-porcelain type in Shanxi are twenty odd fragments found within excavated remains at Dongxiafeng, Xiaxian. Types include mostly plain jars and round bowls, with some decorated with a basket weave or diamond design.
