In addition, there are also a significant number of non-native plants in Hong Kong owing to its long history of human influence. Many species native to China were indeed first described from Hong Kong. Western botanists who first explored the flora of Hong Kong. Such early efforts of botanical studies were continued by the establishment of the Hong Kong Herbarium in 1878, which is the first public herbarium in China and is still in operation to serve the community.
